Night Museum - Surgical

On May 31, 2019, CHAO Art Center joined forces with contemporary artist Yan Lei, Boers-Li Gallery, and Modern Sky to present the first Night Museum event of 2019 under the theme Surgery. The event attracted more than one thousand visitors over the course of the evening.

This Night Museum was composed of artistic practices in diverse forms. At 9:00 pm, artists Zhou Fengling, Li Yanzeng, Ye Linghan, and Hu Ximiao launched the first round of performances. Working collaboratively, the four artists explored the possibilities between experimental music and visual art from multiple perspectives.

DJ Pei’s Performance

The evening then reached its climax with a live performance by CondonOxy, a collaboration between artist Yan Lei and musicians Xu Lin and Li Jianhong. Yan Lei, a singular and independent figure in contemporary Chinese art, is known for his critical stance toward the art system. Through painting, sculpture, installation, video, and performance, he investigates and exposes issues such as power structures, competition, and the conflation of artistic and market values within institutional frameworks. On this occasion, Yan once again adopted unconventional artistic strategies, using a noise performance to directly stimulate the audience’s senses.

The band’s name, CondonOxy, derives from the opioid analgesic OxyContin—whose active ingredient, oxycodone, is known to relieve pain, alter perception, and enhance empathy and pleasure—suggesting an ecstatic experience achieved through the release of excess information accumulated within the audience.

The night concluded with the crowd dancing into the early hours to DJ PEI’s set, fully immersed in the intensity and exhilaration of the Night Museum experience.
