The 2019 Phantom Fever Experimental Art Performance, hosted by CHAO Art Center in collaboration with the School of Art and Design at Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, Hanbo International, JV Communication, and Hangzhou Yihuoren Media Co., Ltd., took place from December 20 to December 24, 2019. The event was held at TOP HOUSE on the 27th floor of CHAO in Sanlitun, Beijing.
Within the triangular space of TOP HOUSE, dozens of Chinese and international artists came together for a five-day program, employing diverse mediums—performance, installation, video, and more—to weave intersecting narratives and create a multimodal on-site experience. The interplay between the city’s nightscape outside and the various forms of screens inside produced works that constantly shifted and evolved on the same visual plane, immersing the audience in a sense of illusion and disorientation.
A new way of “seeing,” a new form of “experience”—and questions about humanity’s future inevitably arise. When these questions have become the central theme of every exhibition, when the flourishing of new media art is undeniable, in this intoxicating present, is the creation of “phantom fever” a turn in direction, a search, a wave, or a pathology? When technology generates ever more spectacles and grants ever greater powers, have we truly become freer?
