Time has always been a crucial element in Zhan Rui’s work, and he generates his pieces through an almost anti-efficiency approach. In this series, the linen canvases ultimately present a uniform, smooth surface reminiscent of metal panels. Each fundamental form is realized through extremely deliberate brushing or rendering, as he strives to minimize his own subjective presence as the creator. Over time, one “thing” gradually transforms into another, and the linen canvas becomes a “metal panel.”
