Fang He

History itself is a form of narrative—something we imagine based on certain pieces of evidence and clues. When intersecting clues from different narrators converge and corroborate one another, the higher the degree of alignment, the stronger the sense of “authenticity” becomes. This convergence of clues from multiple angles is a key element in my work.

For example, the name Fang Baqian—constructed by rearranging the characters of my own name—appears both in the video subtitles and on the medal certificate. The varieties of medals on the ceremonial uniform and the admiral’s seal further imply Fang Baqian’s status and future glory. But even so, the system is far from rigorous; it is merely a simple prototype.
