Artist

Liu Shuyan

Liu Yushan, born in Shandong in 1987, graduated from the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University in 2011, and earned her Master’s degree from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University in 2015. She currently lives and works between Beijing and New York. Her practice centers on distinctive collages, sourcing imagery from both the internet and the physical world, which she re-edits and integrates with her own painterly marks and art historical references. Through cutting, recomposing, and expressive brushwork, she creates visuals that are both improvised and intricate. In 2017, Liu held her first solo exhibition in China, Chasing Demons, at Ying Space in Beijing, boldly exploring themes such as female desire, self-perception, and the dynamics of viewing. Her work navigates the intersection of personal experience, cultural narratives, and the fragmented yet layered language of contemporary image-making.
